- History
- Vancouverite, Debra Sloan gained an interest in ceramics early, in her teen years, and her passion for the practice has remained with her throughout her life. Her education in ceramics is a mix of self-taught informal learning, as well as formal learning, including studying at the Vancouver School of Art in the early 80s and later receiving a Bachelor of Fine Art from Emily Carr University in the early 2000s. Her work has been exhibited regionally, nationally, and internationally and she has participated in numerous artist residencies, and is the recipient of numerous awards and scholarships, with projects funded by British Columbia Arts Council and Canada Council for the Arts. Closer to home, Debra instructed sculpture classes at the Burnaby Shadbolt Center for the Arts, where she worked for over two decades. Over the years, Debra also took to researching, writing and publishing about the history of ceramics in British Columbia and has worked with colleagues to build a Registry of B.C. ceramicists. Recently, in 2017 and 2018, she was involved in the West Vancouver Museum’s retrospective exhibition of Thomas Kakinuma’s work, writing the catalogue, “The Ceramic Art of Thomas Kakinuma.”

The webinar is titled "From Fuki to Ofuro: Japanese Canadians in Burnaby". In this webinar, Raymond Nakamura shares his own Japanese family history (Yamashita and Nakamura families) in British Columbia; provides insight into the Fuki plant (also known as butterbur) which was used by Japanese Canadians as a special culinary plant; describes the customs behind the ofuro (Japanese bathhouse) at Burnaby Village Museum and shares some of his research on Japanese Canadians who lived in Burnaby prior to the internment of Japanese Canadians in World War II. The title slide of Raymond's presentation reads "Japanese Canadians in Pre-War Burnaby". Raymond's presentation is supported with his own illustrations along with historical photographs from personal and public archival collections including the Nikkei National Museum, The City of Burnaby Archives and the Burnaby Village Museum. Japanese families highlighted in Raymond's talk include the Nakamuras; Yamashitas; Yasuis; Kokuryos; Kojimas; Shimotakaharas; Kariatsumaris; Ibatas; Marie Karamoto family and Dr. Taihei Kuzuhara. - Raymond Nakamura was born and raised in Toronto, and has lived most of his adult life in Vancouver. Holding a PhD in Marine Sciences from University of Toronto, Raymond’s study specializing in the hydrodynamics of sand dollars. More recently, he has been recognized for his research work on Japanese Canadians, leading to fact and fiction writing, co-hosting podcasts and delivering creative presentations on the subject –one of which we are honoured to see today. Raymond has worked collaboratively with cultural centers across the Greater Vancouver Region, including Science World, the Vancouver Aquarium, the Nikkei National Museum, the Gulf of Georgia Cannery, to name a few.

- 00:00-2:58: Ella describes the area around Kingsway and Edmonds as she remembers it from her childhood. She names the businesses on the four corners of the intersection, which included a small house which was turned into a business. 2:58-7:18: Ella mentions some of the organized activities of the time, and discusses household responsibilities of girls. Ella describes jobs she had as a teenager, such as a brief time working at the B.C. Electric Café at Carrall St. She talks about her allowance, and describes how she spent the money as well as her earnings from her jobs. XXX 7:18–13:55: Although Ella doesn’t recall being involved in many organized activities, she does mention Sunday school and a girl’s group. She talks about having A.R.P. and First Aid training during the Second World War. Ella notes that children made their own fun, and discusses the games she played, parks she went to, and how she got there. She describes how parents kept an eye on children without strictly supervising them. Ella also talks about neighborhood and school friends, describes her recreation, which was mainly informal, and where she played. XXX 13:55–15:30: Ella can’t choose any one memory of her childhood as being the most joyful, but she recalls the announcement of the declaration of war (of World War II) as her worst childhood memory. XXX 15:30–16:31: Ella describes the families in the neighborhood and her schoolmates as having similar cultural backgrounds. The very few immigrant families she remembers came from Europe. XXX 16:31–18:13: Ella describes her household living arrangements and her toys. XXX 18:13–20:25: Ella comments on the changes which have occurred in Burnaby since her childhood as the city has become built up. She notes that much of it began after the war as veterans returned home. XXX 20:25-21:41: Ella explains why she is still a Burnaby resident and remarks on the self-reliance that children acquired in the earlier days of the city.

- Tim Nishibata is a member of the Vancouver Japanese Gardeners Association. The Vancouver Japanese Gardeners Association is an independent non-profit organization established in 1959. The association consists of professional gardeners and landscapers, aiming to promote Japanese Gardens through construction, maintenance, and education techniques. Members of the association have built many beautiful Japanese gardens throughout the Lower Mainland and work with other organizations in order to increase their knowledge of and expertise in Japanese gardens. The Association provides educational workshops to its members to improve professional knowledge and skills. In 1987, the Association started the Sumi Award, which is granted annually and recognizes outstanding work in the field.
