Cassie Bateman is leaning over a wooden fence post with an open book under her hand, wearing a darkly coloured dress and a long wedding veil. The couple were married in Portage La Prairie, Manitoba on November 9th, 1886. They had four daughters and three sons. After Cassie died in Portage La Prairie in 1909 Edwin married her sister Mary Dale. E. W. Bateman was the builder and the first owner of the Elworth house.

The interview is mainly about Ed Apps involvement in community groups, particularly his work in seniors organizations lobbying for seniors’ housing since his retirement, and views about the role of Rate Payer groups, unions and politics in the development of North and South Burnaby. He also talks about his origin in England, his war service, arrival with his wife Margaret in Burnaby in 1946, his work with the Burnaby School Board and for the local union, the location of some of the older schools, the history of his house, and briefly about his wife and children. - Edward Apps was born in 1918 in London, England, and grew up in Kent and Essex. In WWII he flew the third glider to land in Normandy on June 6th, 1944. He and his wife Margaret Hope (1915-1985) immigrated to British Columbia in 1946, joining his wife’s parents, who had immigrated earlier in 1939, in Burnaby Heights in North Burnaby. He worked for the Burnaby School Board as Foreman Painter, and served on CUPE Local 379 Executive, until his retirement in 1982. In 1948 Ed Apps bought his first lot, for $150.00, in the 4700 block on Georgia Street, building houses there and in the 4100 block before buying his present home, a ca.1900 farm building, in the same area in 1954. North Burnaby was “bush country and orchards” in the 1950s; his two sons played in the ravines; and the family used the tram system on Hastings and Boundary Road for transportation. Development of municipal services seemed slower in North than South Burnaby, and Ed Apps remembers the strong role Rate Payers groups had in creating local services and lobbying Municipal Council for provide services. After retirement Ed Apps became involved in several local and provincial seniors organizations, advocating for better housing, including serving on the Executives of the Network of Burnaby Seniors and the Council of Senior Citizens Organization, and was active in the provincial Seniors Research and Resource and CMHC Housing Committee. He also served on the Centennial Committee of Burnaby.

He graduated with a BA from SFU in both History and Sociology in 1987, his MA degree in Geography in 1989, and his PhD in Cultural Geography at SFU. He taught courses in Geography, Sociology, History and Canadian Studies at several Lower Mainland colleges, before becoming a full time member of the Geography Department at Kwantlen University College.

He and his wife Margaret Hope (1915-1985) immigrated to British Columbia in 1946, joining his wife’s parents, who had immigrated earlier in 1939, in Burnaby Heights in North Burnaby. He worked for the Burnaby School Board as Foreman Painter, and served on CUPE Local 379 Executive, until his retirement in 1982. In 1948 Ed Apps bought his first lot, for $150.00, in the 4700 block on Georgia Street, building houses there and in the 4100 block before buying his present home, a ca.1900 farm building, in the same area in 1954. North Burnaby was “bush country and orchards” in the 1950s; his two sons played in the ravines; and the family used the tram system on Hastings and Boundary Road for transportation. Development of municipal services seemed slower in North than South Burnaby, and Ed Apps remembers the strong role Rate Payers groups had in creating local services and lobbying Municipal Council for provide services. After retirement Ed Apps became involved in several local and provincial seniors organizations, advocating for better housing, including serving on the Executives of the Network of Burnaby Seniors and the Council of Senior Citizens Organization, and was active in the provincial Seniors Research and Resource and CMHC Housing Committee. He also served on the Centennial Committee of Burnaby.

Bateman immigrated to Manitoba, Canada, where he met Catherine “Cassie” Dale, daughter of George and Sarah Gillon Dale. They were married in Portage La Prairie, Manitoba, on November 9, 1886. Edwin and Cassie had seven children: the eldest Edna Caroline Annie (Corner) born in 1889; George, Mamie (McWilliams) born in 1892; Marianne May “May” Bateman born in 1894; Jessie (Fox Kemp); Carey; and the youngest, Warren Stafford born in 1901. Cassie (Dale) Bateman died in Portage La Prairie in 1909. Edwin was transferred to Vancouver by the Canadian Pacific Railway where he married Cassie’s younger sister Mary Dale, born 1865, and moved his six children to Vancouver. The Bateman family first lived at 7th and Balsam in a large new house. It wasn’t until 1920 that they decided to move to the quieter atmosphere of the Burnaby Lake-Deer Lake area. By this time, Edwin Wettenhall Bateman was a retired CPR executive. He moved his wife and daughter May to Deer Lake and commissioned 'Elworth' house, designed by English-born and trained architect Enoch Evans. The house was completed by contractor William Dodson in 1922 and located at the site of what would become Burnaby Village Museum, 6501 Deer Lake Avenue. The Batemans lived in Burnaby for 15 years before moving back to Vancouver in May of 1935. Mary Bateman died July 5, 1935. Edwin Wettenhall Bateman died on November 25, 1957, at the age of 97. Marianne May Bateman died in 1990.

- Biographical Notes
- When Warren McWilliam's grandfather, Edwin Bateman was twenty-one he immigrated to Manitoba, Canada where he met Catherine “Cassie” Dale. They were married in 1886 and had seven children, the eldest Edna Caroline Annie (Corner) born in 1889, George, Mamie Dale (McWilliams) born in Portage La Prairie in 1892, Marianne May “May” Bateman born in Hartney, Manitoba in 1894, Jessie (Fox Kemp), Carey, and the youngest Warren Stafford born in 1901. Cassie died in Portage La Prairie in 1909. Edwin was transferred to Vancouver by the CPR where he married Cassie’s younger sister Mary Dale and moved his six children to Vancouver. In 1920 Edwin Bateman moved his wife and youngest daughter May to Deer Lake and commissioned 'Elworth' house, designed by English-born and trained architect Enoch Evans. The house was completed by contractor William Dodson in 1922 and located at the site of what would become Burnaby Village Museum, 6501 Deer Lake Avenue. Mamie Bateman married George Lloyd McWilliams May 19, 1915 and had one child, Warren McWilliams. When Warren was very young, the McWilliams family moved into a small house just across Douglas Road from the Bateman’s and Mamie and Warren were daily visitors to Elworth house for ten years. Warren McWilliams attended Douglas Road School and spent a lot of time at Deer Lake swimming and skating. E.W. Bateman died in 1957 at the age of ninety-nine. George Lloyd McWilliams died June 30, 1961 at the age of seventy-four, his wife Mamie Dale (Bateman) McWilliams died June 1, 1979 at the age of eight-seven.

- Interview was digitized in 2010 allowing it to be accessible on Heritage Burnaby. The digitization project was initiated by the Community Heritage Commission with support from City of Burnaby Council and the BC History Digitization Program of the Irving K. Barber Learning Centre, University of British Columbia. It was recognized by the Heritage Society of BC with an award in 2012.
