Scope and Content: Subseries consists of photographs of Burnaby Lake compiled by Nancy Peter. Subseries also contains one school report: "A Study of Burnaby taken from the Point of View of Education."

History: Nancy M. Bailey was the vice principal of Lord Tweedsmeer Hight School in Cloverdale, BC. In 1941, she met Laurence J. Peter, an industrial arts teacher at the school. In 1943 the couple married and in 1947 they moved to Burnaby. Laurence and Nancy had four children: two boys, John and Ted, and two girls, Alice and Margaret. The family was actively involved in the Burnaby community with Laurence and Nancy taking part in local politics and community activities and their children participating in Boy Scouts and Girl Guides and music lessons. All four children graduated from Burnaby North High School and in 1970, Ted and Alice completed their studies at British Columbia Institute of Technology (BCIT). They worked local jobs in the community including on the construction of the Burnaby Mountain Golf Course. Laurence worked as a Mental Health Coordinator (Special Counselor) in the Vancouver School System and in 1959, Nancy joined the staff at the newly opened Burnaby Central Senior Secondary School as a Math teacher. She later became the head of the Mathematics Department at the school. The couple continued their education at summer school at Washington State University in Pullman, Washington, where Nancy completed her Masters Degree in 1964 and Laurence his Doctoral degree in 1963. Laurence joined the faculty of the University of British Columbia in 1965 and received the WSU Regents’ Distinguished Alumnus Award in 1980. The couple separated in 1965 and Laurence moved to California in 1966 to teach at the University of Southern California. Nancy continued to teach at Burnaby South, until her retirement in 1978 after 30 years as head of the Mathematics Department at Burnaby Central. She was an active member of the Burnaby Historical Society for many years. Nancy passed away in Nanaimo near her family on April 21, 2013 at the age of 97.

History: The North Burnaby Fish and Game Club was created out of the desire of Burnaby citizens for a club for sports fishermen, hunters, and archers. The inaugural meeting was held January 31, 1956 and Bill Killer, Maurice Griffin, Lloyd Smith, Gerry Wells, Joe Shand, Carson White and Bob Maitland were empowered by the 60 men present to form the organization. The club was officially registered in Victoria on March 12, 1958.

History: The North Burnaby Kiwanis Club was first organized on May 31, 1949. The club was officially incorporated in 1954 with W.G. Switzer as its first president. The territorial limits of the club were of Burnaby from north of the Grandview highway to the easterly limits of the municipality, using the Great Northern Railway (G.N.R.) right-of-way as their division line. Membership consisted of men in good character and community standing, residing, having interest in, or engaged in recognised lines of business, agricultural, institutional and professional life within the territorial limits of the club. The North Burnaby Kiwanis Club’s goals were: to give primacy to the human and spiritual, rather than to the material values of life; to encourage the daily living of the Golden Rule in all human relationships; to promote the adoption and application of higher social, business and professional standards; to develop, by precept and example, a more intelligent, aggressive and serviceable citizenship; to provide, through this club, a practical means to form enduring friendships, to render altruistic service and to build a better community; to cooperate in creating and maintaining that sound public opinion and high idealism which make possible the increase of righteousness, justice, patriotism and good will. The final meeting of the North Burnaby Kiwanis Club was held January 17, 1977.

Scope and Content: Subseries consists of photographs compiled by the Mayor's Office for inclusion in the publication "Pioneer Tales of Burnaby" and drafts of the manuscript.

History: On May 28, 1980 the Mayor and Council of Burnaby held a tea to honour Burnaby “pioneers.” The event was held as part of “Burnaby Funfest Days ‘80” and was meant to recognize members of the community who had resided in Burnaby prior to 1930 and acknowledge their contributions as pioneers of the City. Although approximately 100 people were expected, more than 500 actually attended. Each participant was asked to fill out a brief personal information form outlining their experiences in Burnaby’s earliest days. The response was so favorable that the idea of compiling a book to capture these memories was born. The City hired a writer edit and organize the book they held writing contests to encourage senior residents to share their experiences. Other community members became involved in the project when the City enlisted the help of secondary school students to type manuscripts for those unable to do so and journalism students from the British Columbia Institute of Technology to conduct interviews with additional “pioneers.” The book was published in 1987.

History: Ernest Pitman owned a men’s furnishings store in Weston-super-Mare, England. He and Mary Jane “Jean” Gill were married in Cardiff, Wales and their children Clifford, Dorothy, Marjorie and Gwendolyn were all born in Weston-super-Mare, England. Ernest was the brother-in-law of Willard H. Hoyt of Phillips-Hoyt Lumber Company on McKay Avenue. The family of six came to Canada in 1912 and settled in Burnaby in 1914. Ernest Pitman had to clear the lot at 2766 Cassie Avenue of tree stumps before Mr. Mansell could build their wooden four room house. The family moved to Victoria in 1920, renting out the house on Cassie Avenue, and returning to it in 1922. The Pitman children attended Kingsway West School and Burnaby South High School. Ernest Pitman bought a dry goods store near the corner of McKay and Kingsway and renamed it McKay Dry Goods Store in 1926. He expanded the store when Lloyd’s Studio closed to include a post-office, ladies and menswear, children and babywear. His older children, Dorothy and Gwen, were the first employees, working at the store after school and on Saturdays. Clifford and Marge also served through the years. McKay Dry Goods closed in the late 1950s but the structure still stands. Ernest Pitman opened his second shop, Jubilee Dry Goods and Men’s Furnishings, in 1930 in the area then known as Shacktown. In 1935, he expanded the store to include the old Wray shoe store and post office. Jubilee was first managed by Dorothy, but when she married Dave Howat Gwen took over as manageress. In 1961, Gwen Pitman won the Show Window Contest in the small retail outlets category, receiving a $100 prize from the Burnaby Chamber of Commerce. She continued to run the store until she closed it for the last time in 1971 and retired. The other children also lived their adult lives in Burnaby: Clifford Pitman and his wife raised two boys on Rumble Street and Marjorie Pitman Everett and her husband raised three children in the Grange-Willingdon area.

Scope and Content: Subseries consists of papers and photographs collected by Pixie McGeachie during her tenure as archivist for the Burnaby Historical Society Community Archives. Also included are newspaper articles and essays penned by Pixie, a series of research files collected and organized for her own personal use and a selection of ephemera.

History: Doreen "Pixie" McGeachie was a resident of Burnaby for over 60 years. She served as the editor for the Burnaby Examiner newspaper and wrote a column entitled "Burnaby History" for The News. In 1974 she authored her first book titled "Bygones of Burnaby" which was one of the first to develop anecdotal stories about pioneer life in Burnaby. She authored "Burnaby - A Proud Century" in 1992 and in 2002 she wrote a biography of the city's namesake in the book "Land of Promise: Robert Burnaby's letters from Colonial B.C." Pixie also contributed many hours of volunteering; helping to establish Burnaby's first museum Heritage Village in 1971, serving as President of the Burnaby Historical Society from 1991-1993. She served a six year term on Burnaby's Heritage Commission, leading the charge to preserve many historic sites throughout the city, and during her twenty years as the Community Archives volunteer archivist for the Historical Society, she succeeded in gathering thousands of rare and valuable historic photographs and documents which now forms the core of the photograph collection on the Heritage Burnaby website. The City of Burnaby awarded Pixie McGeachie the Kushiro Cup as Citizen of the Year in 2002. In 2006 she received a Heritage BC project award for leading the Friends of Interurban 1223 project, and in 2008 Heritage BC recognised her again by presenting her with the Ruby Nobb Award. Pixie McGeachie passed away in August of 2010. On 24 September, 2011, the City of Burnaby dedicated the reading room at the City Archives in her honour and formally named it the Pixie McGeachie Reading Room in recognition of her years of service to the community.

Scope and Content: Subseries consists of a photocopied certificate of birth for Eva Lilian Ramsey [Ramsay] as well as handwritten accounts of Ramsey family history and two family photographs.

History: Edwin Ramsey came to Canada from Scotland when he was about 11 years old. He was given farmland and quickly became an avid farmer. Edwin Ramsey married Annie Plummer circa 1893. This was Annie Plummer’s second marriage. In the early years of their marriage, Edwin and Annie lived in Orange Ridge, Manitoba and operated a store and post office. Their first child, Queenie, was born November 11, 1895. Albert Edwin "Bert" Ramsey was born January 27, 1898. Eva Lilian Ramsey was born January 24, 1900. Jessica “Jessie” Ramsey was born two years later. The Ramseys then headed to New Westminster. By 1905 they had bought "the Park” (what is now Robert Burnaby Park) from Mr. Wintermute for $4,000 cash. They moved into a large house already constructed on the property. The park was full of apple trees, a garden, pigs, two cows, horses and a buggy and wagon with a barn near the second street entrance. By now, the eldest, Queenie was enrolled at Burnaby’s first school. Twins Ernest “Ernie” and Dorothy “Doll” were born in 1906. Eva started at Edmonds School in 1908 when it was just built. Her siblings Queenie, Bert, Jeanie, Ernie and Doll all attended the school as well. In 1909 the Ramseys sold the park to Mr. Vidal of New Westminster and his syndicate along with a portable mill to Pemberton & Sons and received enough money to buy six lots on 12th Avenue where they built a large house. Gordon “Gord” Ramsey was born in that house in 1909. Soon after, they sold the house and moved to Blaine for six months, then on to Bellingham where they remained until Edwin and Annie divorced in 1914. Edwin moved alone to Alberta and Annie moved back to Burnaby with their children. Bert began attending the University of British Columbia where he studied to become a doctor. He joined the army in May of 1916, went to war and was killed at Vimy Ridge on April 12, 1917 at the age of 19. As Mr. Vital and his syndicate were to go to war as captains, Mr. Vital gave up the park property and Annie was able to take it back. Unfortunately, the new initiative of taxing wild lands caused Annie to lose the park property through tax sale proceedings. She then entered into a lease agreement with Burnaby which allowed her to stay on at "the Park." With twelve years of piano training, Annie was considered a talented musician and played the piano at St. Alban’s church for many years. Annie Ramsey died on October 3, 1926. Jessica, Dorothy and Queenie all moved to the United States. Gordon married a woman named Irene. Eva married William “Bill” Anderson at the St. Stephen’s Church in New Westminster on July 7, 1919. She and Bill were the first couple to marry there. They held their wedding reception at “the Park.” In 1921, Bill and Eva bought a home at 723 Second Street for $2450. They had one daughter, Dorothy "Dot" Anderson. Dot later married Robert V. “Bob” Douglas. Eva died in 1995.

Scope and Content: Subseries consists of a Riverway West School PTA scrapbook and photographs.

History: The original Riverway West School was a one room school house built in 1923 just west of the ravine at Sussex Avenue and Marine Drive. Miss Marion Swanson was the first teacher at the school ande Mr. Morrison its first custodian. Miss Carrie Kidd taught from 1924 to 1935, with the enrolment increasing from 18 in 1924 to 42 pupils in 1929, and including grades one to seven. In 1930 grades one to four were at Riverway while the older students went to Nelson. It continued on as a one-room school of four grades until 1952. As the school was seen by parents to be “greatly lacking” for students and teachers “in comfortable accommodations and vital equipment necessary for their extra curricular and recreational needs, such as were enjoyed by children in the larger schools” they formed a parent-teacher association in September 1951 to remedy the situation. From the beginning the PTA was very active in making its desires known to the School Board and “the school was very fortunate to have an organisation which put forth such a united effort on behalf of the children”. Their first bazaar fundraiser allowed the PTA to purchase a hot plate and the necessary utensils to provide the students with soup and cocoa during the cold weather. At their request, the School Board improved the electrical wiring in the school and built a roof over the stairs to the basement and provided more sports equipment for the children. Art classes and piano classes were started through the efforts of the members and in 1953 a cub pack and a brownie pack with PTA members as Cub Leaders and Brownie Leaders was created. A ditto machine and school library were the direct results of successful bazaars held by the PTA. The PTA also made a survey of the school district in 1951 to analyse the future school population and presented the results to the School Board. Following this, a portable unit was erected beside the existing school house for use the following September. It was in use until 1958. In the late 1950s, the PTA approached the School Board and the Burnaby Parks and Recreation Commission and proposed a park on the grounds adjacent to their school to relieve a playfield deficiency. The creation of Riverway West Park was the direct result of this proposal. As Parks Planner Paul Stocksted pointed out in 1961, “All of this would not have been possible had not the people associated with the PTA insisted on the solution to the problem of inadequate play areas.” In 1957 the first unit of the new Riverway West School underwent construction. Designed by Carlberg and Jackson with Remigio Maniaga as the contractor, it was completed in September of 1957 and consisted of four classrooms, an activity room and administration facilities. A two classroom addition, also designed by Carlberg and Jackson. was completed on the last day of 1959, three months after its construction began.

Scope and Content: Subseries consist of records created and collected by Robert Prittie during his teaching and political careers and following his retirement from public office. Records include Burnaby Teachers Association and other school organization records, election papers, and copies of various City reports and meeting minutes. Also included are photographic postcards of Burnaby, photographs of Robert Prittie attending official City functions, and aerial photographs of industrial and business sites in Burnaby.

History: Born in North Vancouver on December 5, 1919, Robert “Bob” William Prittie was the first of four sons born to Wilmot Prittie and Mary Adair. As a child, his health was weaker than younger brothers Bill, Eric and Halford, as he suffered from Polio and asthma. Bob was an industrious youth who left school early to work in a department store warehouse. At the outbreak of the Second World War, Bob enlisted with the Royal Canadian Air Force and spent the duration of the war serving on the ground in Canada at the Patricia Bay Air Force Base and the No. 3 Bombing and Gunnery School in Manitoba, completing his high school education through correspondence courses. While at the Patricia Bay Air Force Base, he met pre-school teacher Grace King of Sidney, Vancouver Island. By 1940 they were married and soon after, had their first son, Robert King. In 1945, Bob was discharged from the air force with the rank of sergeant and entered the University of British Columbia, graduating with a Bachelor of Arts degree with honours in history. After the war, Bob spent a few years working in Ottawa as a foreign-service officer, but he returned to UBC in 1949, receiving a diploma in education. He later undertook post-graduate studies at Laval University and Western Washington State College. Bob returned to Burnaby in 1950 following the tragic death of their son. He immediately began teaching. Over the next thirteen years, he taught at Sperling Avenue School, McPherson Park Junior High School, Burnaby South High School and Burnaby North High School. He and Grace went on to have three more children: Heather in 1951, Bruce in 1953, and Ian in 1955. In 1959 he was elected to serve as a member of the municipal Council, re-elected and serving until the end of his term in 1962 when he left to serve as Member of Parliament for the Burnaby-Richmond riding. He held that office until 1968. In January 1969, Bob first took office as Mayor of Burnaby and in that capacity served on the GVRD as a Director for a number of years. In May of 1973, he decided to resign as Mayor of Burnaby in order to take up a position as Assistant Deputy Minister of Municipal Affairs and in 1975 he was appointed as the Minister of Municipal Affairs, a post he held for a short time. After his tenure as Minister, Bob retired from public life and he and his second wife Isobel Pothecary moved to Victoria. Isobel had three children from a previous marriage: Alan, Deirdre and Fiona. Bob left an enduring legacy for the citizens of Burnaby as a champion of schools, libraries and parks and recreation programs. In 1978 he was awarded the title of "Freeman of the Municipality" and in 1991 a new branch of the Burnaby Public Library was opened and named after him. His status as Freeman and the naming of the library in his honour are testament to his record of service and dedication to the community and its citizens. Robert Prittie died on January 14, 2002.

Scope and Content: Subseries consists of Ross family history, memories of the Burnaby Lake Interurban, Ross Service Station letterhead and photographs of the Ross Service Station.

History: Frederick "Fred" Sullivan Ross was born 1887 in Edinburgh, Scotland. He took his apprenticeship in mechanics in Glasgow prior to 1911, following which he immigrated to Canada. During the First World War he returned to Britain and joined the Royal Navy. He was a Chief Petty Officer, working in the engine room of a mine sweeper in the North Atlantic. Margaret Binnie Dougal was in 1884 in Linlithgow, Scotland. She trained as a nurse before emigrating to Canada in 1911. She also returned to Britain during the war years, nursing at Boulogne in France and later Bristol before returning to Vancouver in 1919. She met Fred through a mutual friend, Agnes Rhind. Fred and Margaret married in 1920 in Vancouver, BC. Their first home was in North Vancouver and was where their first child, Ronald, was born. In 1921 or 1922 they moved to the Burnaby Lake area, buying a three-quarter acre parcel of land at 2974 Sprott Street and had two more children, Ian and Alistair. Fred built, owned and operated the Ross Service Station on Douglas Road, established in 1922 or 1923. The station property ran from Douglas Road up to the Douglas Road School’s fence line. After the municipality appropriated part of the property in the 1930s to create a junction for the new Grandview Highway and existing Douglas Road, Fred got permission to build an upper station with two more pumps. The driveway curved down to the station from where Sprott Street now joins Canada Way and rejoined that road near its junction with Douglas Road. At Ross Service Station, Fred did automobile repairs and used the family car, a Studebaker Commander, as a towing vehicle. He created a garden north of the service station on the upper level where he grew chrysanthemums and daises. In the 1930s, Terry Rowley worked at the service station as one of Fred’s assistants. Fred ran the station until he sold it in about 1949. Margaret died December 29, 1969 at the age of 85. Fred died on August 21, 1971 at the age of 84.

History: Hector MacCubbin was Principal officer at Oakalla Prison Farm. During a major disturbance in September of 1982 he fired three rounds of ammunition to prevent a mass exit from the yard. Roy Staples was a former Senior Corrections Officer. Roy has written numerous articles on Oakalla, including one on Oakalla's award winning Clydesdales.

Scope and Content: Subseries consists of the administrative records of the South Burnaby Garden Club from their early beginnings as the Central Park Agricultural Association and Farmer's Institute (1901-1926), the South Burnaby Horticultural Association and Farmers Institute (1927-1957) to the early 2000s.

History: The South Burnaby Garden Club as formed in 1901 after a group of Central Park residents met to form a Farmers’ Institute. They leased 17 acres of Central Park from the Provincial Government and with the support of government grants constructed a two-story building on the property. The building was constructed in time for the first annual Fall Fair in September 1901. In 1903 the Institute amalgamated with the South Vancouver and Burnaby Agricultural Society to become the Central Park Agricultural Association & Farmers Institute. In 1907 the membership doubled to 520 members. Increasing urbanization and the First World War saw the last exhibition in 1919. The lease on the building expired in 1921. The Society continued to meet and hold small exhibitions in rented halls under the South Burnaby Horticultural Association name. After several name changes, the association became the South Burnaby Garden Club in 1958 and continues to this day.

Scope and Content: Subseries consists of records and photographs created by the Thrussell family pertaining to their home and farm in the Marine Drive and Nelson area of Burnaby.

History: Harriett Fenwick came out west from North Dakota in 1892. She married Frederick "Fred" Thrussell and the couple opened the North Arm Dairy, the Thrussell farm and family business on Marine Drive at Nelson Avenue in Burnaby. After Fred Thrussell passed away, she sold of the dairy equipment and stock at an auction on January 18, 1910. Their eldest daughter Mary Anne “Annie” Thrussell (later Phillips, and later again Welsh) was born in Burnaby in December 1895. After marrying her first husband, she moved to Ferndale, Washington and had their son Lawerne Phillips. In 1930, she moved to Surrey with her second husband, Jim Welsh and her second child, Hazel. Fred and Harriet's son Frederick T. Thrussell was born in Burnaby in 1901. He attended Dundonald Public School in Burnaby, with Florence M. Bowell as his teacher in 1911. As a youth, he worked in a shingle mill and spent the rest of his working years in shingle and sawmills. Frederick T. and Ruth McMillan were married March 9, 1929 and the couple moved to Surrey. Fred and Harriet's second daughter, Ethel Thrussell (later Cleghorn), attended Alta Vista Public School as a senior in 1913 where J.G. Whiten was her teacher. Their third daughter, Eva H. Thrussell, went to Riverway East School with Helena F. Crake as her teacher. In 1914, Eva attended Nelson Avenue School with F. Anderson as her teacher. Their youngest daughter Edith Thrussell (now Cleghorn) also attended Riverway East in the same class as her sister Eva. When eldest daughter Annie celebrated her 90th birthday in December of 1985, Edith was her only living sibling.

Scope and Content: Subseries consists of records and photographs created by the Tinkerbell Cooperative Kindergarten. Photographs depict students participating in various classroom activities and field trips.

History: Tinkerbell Cooperative Kindergarten was established in 1955. The school was spearheaded by a group of mothers who felt that four and five year olds would benefit from a preschool. In February of that year, they met with the President of the Parent Teachers Association (PTA) and two members from the Helper's Committee of the Cooperative Play Group Association. They began meeting weekly to plan the opening of a local play group. On March 26, the group held a salvage drive to raise funds for equipment, and, with the help of the fathers, raised $142.00. They continued to raise funds though bingo, teas, and dances. Fathers made a stove, kitchen cabinets, easels, hand carved animals, screens, shelves and a wash stand. The Cooperative Kindergarten opened April 18, 1955 with an enrollment of 23 children. Lucy Emma Brown is considered the founder of the school, teaching kindergarten from the school's beginning in 1955 until it closed in 1968.
