The badge on the cap appears to be a maple leaf with a scroll running down from left to right at the bottom of the leaf. By 1860, the maple leaf was incorporated into the badge of the 100th Regiment (Royal Canadians) and during the First World War, the maple leaf was included in the badge of the Canadian Expeditionary Force. The badge depicted here may be a cadet or school variation of the standard military badge. The painted backdrop includes a bay window with flower pots at the bottom.

- History
- Charles Bruce Patterson was born in Victoria, BC on January 21, 1892. He was the eldest son of Dugald Campbell Patterson Sr., and Frances Mabel (Webb) Patterson. Bruce arrived in Burnaby at the age of two with his parents and younger brother, William Harold Patterson (called Bill). Bruce attended the West Burnaby School with several of his siblings in the late 1890’s. At the beginning of World War One, Bruce enlisted with the Seaforth Highlander’s but was discharged due to having flat feet. He spent the duration of the war building ships to help the war effort in the New Westminster Shipyards. His official letter of service from the shipyards was donated to the New Westminster Museum located at Irving House. Bruce was an avid photographer and captured many scenes of early Burnaby with his Kodak camera. Some of Bruce Patterson’s photographic collection was donated to the Burnaby Village Museum and can be viewed on this website. Bruce Patterson died on February 16, 1979. - Photograph of the eighteen girls of the first Burnaby Girl Guide Company. The girl guide flag with a clover leaf symbol in the centre, and writing, "1st Burnaby Company" at the top, is hanging on a staff behind the girls. An earlier catalogue record from 1976 notes that the brick building behind the girls would almost certainly be the Burnaby Municipal Hall built in 1911, from having examined the detail of the brickwork, the stonework of the foundations and the joinery around the windows of the basement. One of the girls is holding a pennant with the Union Jack at one end and the word "Welcome" in the fly. The 1976 record surmises that this might be for the visit of the Prince Wales in 1919. The girls' uniforms consist mostly of white middies, long dark skirts and Australian-style Stetsons. Some girls are wearing dark dresses with a belt at the waist and a knotted scarf at the neck. The skirts are mid-calf. The Girl Guides first formed in Burnaby in 1914, and worked on making and sending gifts to the soldiers in their war efforts. An annotation on the back of the photograph reads, "300 out."
