- History
- Doreen Anne Fowler Lawson was born July 8, 1928, to Eva Barnhill and Leonard Fowler. Her parents met in Alberta but decided to move to Vancouver where they got married and Doreen was born. The family moved to the north side of Claude Avenue in Burnaby when Doreen was a few months old. In 1931, they moved to a house with an acre of land directly across the street from their first house.
- When Doreen was six, her family moved to Collingwood, Vancouver, near where her father grew up. This is where her brother Ron was born. The family moved again to County Line in Langley Prairie in 1944, which is where Doreen met Edward Lawson, her future husband. Soon after, they moved to a seven-acre plot in Burquitlam. Ed and Doreen Lawson’s eldest daughter, Linda, was born in 1954. Their second daughter, Wendy, was born in 1959 and their youngest, Lisa, was born in 1961. They lived in the Brentwood area, where all three daughters attended Brentwood Elementary School. Linda went on to Alpha Secondary School.
- In 1945, Doreen began her first of several office jobs, and in the early 1950s she became the first woman to be elected into a vice-president position within the BC Trade Union Congress (now the BC Federation of Labour).
- Doreen Lawson had a long and prolific political career, starting as Parks Commissioner in 1965, and serving as its chair from 1969 to 1971. She was instrumental in the selection and promotion of the rhododendron as the official flower of Burnaby in 1966. In 1971, she was elected to Burnaby City Council and, in 1972, Doreen proposed that Council take action to declare Burnaby Lake a wildlife sanctuary. After a 10-year campaign, she was able to convince Council to declare the park “a nature conservation area.” She put forward a policy of preservation for creeks and streams, as well as a proposal to preserve trees in subdivisions, both of which were adopted by Council. Doreen continued to serve on Council until 1985, during which time she initiated and chaired the Burnaby Information Committee, which designed the present Burnaby logo (and official flower pins) and established the Information Burnaby Newsletter. In 1979 Doreen Lawson won Vancouver Natural History Society’s Frank Sanford Award.
- In 1984, Doreen was elected the first woman president of the Federation of Canadian Municipalities. Doreen ran as a BC Liberal Party candidate in the new Federal Riding of Burnaby in 1979, and from 1985 to 1987, she served as the Executive Director of the British Columbia Liberal Party. As the B.C. Liberal Party Executive Director, her major responsibility was to work with both the Federal and Provincial Associations in implementing riding organizations and fundraising programs in preparation for election time. In the 1980s, Doreen was an active guest lecturer at Burnaby Elementary and High Schools as well as at the University of British Columbia and Simon Fraser University. Doreen was active in a variety of community clubs and organizations including: the Burnaby Library Board; Greater Vancouver Spinners and Weavers Guild; and Vancouver Natural History Society. She was an executive member of the Burnaby-New Westminster Canada Summer Games; the Burnaby Division of the United Way; Information Burnaby Committee; and the Brentwood Parent Teachers Association; as well as serving as the President of the Burnaby Voters Association from 1988-1990.
- In 1990, Doreen was elected back to Burnaby Council and put forward the rejuvenation of Burnaby Lake which she saw completed before her final year on Council in 1999. Doreen continued to be a strong environmental advocate for the protection and rejuvenation of Burnaby Lake after she retired from council.

Historical information and photographs pertaining to South Burnaby pioneer families and organizations were compiled from interviews with the intention of publishing a book.
- History
- Mary Gertrude (Bolton) Forsyth was born at her parents' home in Burnaby on March 5, 1923, and was the daughter of Richard Bolton and Gertrude (nee Hern). Mary's father, Richard, immigrated to Canada from Sunderland, England, in 1911. He lived with his brother George in New Westminster prior to purchasing property in South Burnaby in 1916 and built a bungalow located at 859 Marine Drive. Richard Bolton was employed as the municipal treasurer for the Corporation of the District of Burnaby and, in 1919, he returned to Sunderland with three months leave of absence to marry Mary Gertrude Hern, daughter of Captain and Mrs. John Hern. Mary grew up with her parents and sister Nancy in the house that her father built on Marine Drive. She married Lloyd Forsyth in 1946 and they had two children, Diane and Robert. Mary and her husband raised their family in Burnaby and built a house at 855 Marine Drive, on the lot originally purchased by her father, and moved later to a house located at 6457 Marine Drive. In 1964, after her children were grown, Mary completed her teaching degree at Simon Fraser University and went on to teach kindergarten at Nelson Elementary School. While a teacher within the Burnaby School District, Mary was instrumental in adopting ballet as part of the school curriculum. Mary was an active member of the Burnaby Historical Society, participating and leading local events and seminars. She was inspired by the idea of the 'Housewives Holiday', originally initiated by the Vancouver "Y’ S". In February 1960, she was integral in forming a committee in South Burnaby, working alongside Ruth Turner, Faye Treagh, and Dorothy Turnbull. The "Housewives Holiday" committee (a branch of the Clinton-Glenwood Recreation Association) planned several events at Bonsor Hall for Burnaby housewives from October 6 to December 8, 1960. After her retirement from teaching, Mary returned to Simon Fraser University to do further studies and, in 1983, she wrote an essay for an Environmental Education course, titled "A Walking Environment for South Burnaby". The essay was conducted as a feasibility study to provide a walking environment in her community and included a formal essay, a media book, a map, and a slide presentation which was presented to a variety of local community groups. In 1984, Mary was the recipient of the North Fraser Harbour Commission Award to further her work on this project. In October 1986, her essay was adapted as a proposal to The Corporation of the District of Burnaby for a walking and cycling trail system for South Burnaby. Her proposal was taken into consideration by council and was later adopted by the Parks and Recreation Commission. Mary was very much interested in the history of South Burnaby and spent time between 1990 to 2004 conducting research through the Burnaby Historical Society, The City of Burnaby Archives, and several pioneering families who agreed to share their family records and be interviewed. Mary compiled her research into short historical and biographical essays by geographical area, family name, and organization. Mary (Bolton) Forsyth lived her whole life in South Burnaby and was an active and committed member of her community. She died on November 10, 2010.

- History
- The Burnaby Arts Council was formed in the early 1960s and was comprised of representatives from six existing arts organizations: the Burnaby Writer's Society, the Burnaby Historical Society, the Burnaby Art Gallery, the Burnaby Players, the Burnaby Civic Opera and a dance group. The Council was initially called the Fine Arts Council and its first mandate was to see the Art Gallery move from its location in the basement of the Burnaby Kingsway Library into premises of its own. Sheila Kincaid was a driving force behind this venture and when the Gallery was successfully relocated, she became the first director of the Burnaby Art Gallery in its present location in Ceperley House. During the 1967 Centennial Year, one of the Municipal projects for the Centennial was the dedication of the land at Deer Lake Park for an Arts Centre. At this time, the Fine Arts Council changed its name to the Burnaby Arts Council and the group focused its energies on securing funding for needed renovations and staffing for the Gallery and Arts Centre. That year, all the groups in the Council donated their share of the Provincial Cultural Grants toward outfitting the James Cowan Theatre. 1967 also saw a big Festival of the Arts produced to raise the public's awareness of the Arts Centre. During the late 1960s, the Council worked to get registered Society status and by 1976, it was fully incorporated. Throughout the years, the Burnaby Arts Council has supported and sponsored the arts and arts programs in Burnaby. Events such as the Burnaby Craft Market, the Burnaby Summer Theatre, the Christmas Craft Fair, and various concert series, studio tours, exhibitions and displays have been presented by the Council and it continues to be an active and driving force behind the celebration of arts and culture in Burnaby.

- Burnaby’s first municipal archive officially opened on November 10, 2001, and is located in the McGill Branch Public Library at 4595 Albert Street. The City Archives functions as a branch of the Office of the City Clerk and operates as the official repository of Burnaby’s municipal records, containing records dating back to Burnaby’s incorporation in 1892. In 2007, the City of Burnaby Archives expanded its collection mandate to include private as well as public records. Types of records held at the Archives include City Records (Council minutes and reports, bylaws, departmental records and photographs) and records from private individuals and community organizations (correspondence, reports, minutes, photographs, moving images and sound recordings). The Archives storage area is equipped with the sophisticated environmental controls necessary to preserve Burnaby’s unique archival material into the future. The mandate of the City of Burnaby Archives is to identify, acquire, preserve and make accessible archival material in the form of civic and private records documenting the history of the City of Burnaby.

- The Parks and Recreation Department changed its name to the Parks, Recreation, and Cultural Services Department in 1997 to better reflect the department's mandate to operate a major arts centre and heritage facility, and to provide extensive cultural services and support to organizations in addition to parks and recreation services. On January 1, 2023, the City renamed the department to Parks, Recreation and Culture to be consistent with other departments, grammatically correct, and reflective of the department "moving forward" to a better Burnaby. Mary Morrison-Clark has served as General Manager of the department since November 2022.

In 1924, Don moved with his family from Wilkie, Saskatchewan, to North Vancouver, where they lived until 1930 when they moved to Burnaby. In 1942, Don moved back to North Vancouver, and in 1951, he settled in West Vancouver. As a child, Don attended Queen Mary Elementary School in North Vancouver, followed by attending Burnaby North High School and completing a degree in Engineering at the University of British Columbia in 1948. Don married Rosina Amelia Hewett in 1942 and together they had four children: Donald James (Winnie) McQueen; Rose Anne (Wayne) McQueen; Robin Elaine (Robert) McQueen; and Robert Douglas McQueen. Following the death of Don's first wife, Rosina, in 1966, Don was married three more times, beginning with Laverne Cyr, followed by Marian Schreiber and Gregoria Noble. He had seven grandchildren: Tanja, Mark, Todd, Karina, Morgan, Anthony, and Kosal. During World War II, Don worked at Boeing Air Craft, building planes, and after the war, from 1945 until 1948, he worked at the shipyards in North Vancouver. In 1948, he joined Dairyland, which was affiliated with the Fraser Valley Milk Producers' Association (FVMPA), working as the head of Engineering until his retirement in 1980. Building the FVMPA plant, which opened in 1964, was a highlight of his career, where he was employed as the lead Engineer in creating a state-of-the-art plant located at Lougheed Highway and Sperling Avenue in Burnaby. Don spent three years directing research investigations into modern dairies and ice cream plants throughout Canada and the USA. This plant served the FVMPA for many years to come, and his dedication resulted in giving hundreds of hours of overtime for which he was never paid. The FVPMA was organized by farmers to protect the quality and price of milk. It was granted its charter on June 18th, 1913, and the organization was represented by farmers of every district in the Fraser Valley with 22 locals. In 1919, the Association purchased manufacturing plants and a milk company, and in 1920, the firm acquired another milk company and condensery. In 1923, the FVPMA became the first Canadian dairy organization to establish a quality control laboratory and employ a bacteriologist, and in 1943, the Association established Dairyland dairies. The original headquarters for the FVMPA was located at 425 W. 8th Avenue in Vancouver and as a result of FVMPA's growing success and need for expansion, a modern plant was opened in Burnaby in 1964. The four-million-dollar plant was built on a 24-acre site located at Sperling and Lougheed Highway. This location also housed the association's head office, the Dairyland Fluid Milk Division plant and offices, the Arctic Ice Cream Division plant and offices and the Concentrated Milk Division (Pacific Evaporated and Powder) sales and offices. The facility included a processing plant, service block, garage, primary and secondary mechanical and electrical services, and air conditioned office space. The general contract to build the plant was awarded to John Laing and Son (Canada) Ltd. and was overseen by the FVMPA engineering department, headed by D.R. McQueen, P. Eng. Don belonged to the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of B.C. (APEGB) from 1948, was a founding member of the Hollyburn Country Club in West Vancouver, and between 1950 and the 1960s, was a director on the board for the West Vancouver YMCA. Don had many hobbies including Russian ballet, kinesiology, drawing, photography, sailing, canoeing, and teaching ballroom dancing and downhill skiing. He competed in fencing in the Empire Games in the 1950s and was slated to canoe for Canada in the 1940 Olympics but was prevented by the war. He was a carpenter and handyman, beginning with building his first sailboat at 12 years of age, and later enjoyed building and restoring furniture. Don passed away on October 22, 2017 at the age of 99.

- History
- The original Riverway West School was a one room school house built in 1923 just west of the ravine at Sussex Avenue and Marine Drive. Miss Marion Swanson was the first teacher at the school ande Mr. Morrison its first custodian. Miss Carrie Kidd taught from 1924 to 1935, with the enrolment increasing from 18 in 1924 to 42 pupils in 1929, and including grades one to seven. In 1930 grades one to four were at Riverway while the older students went to Nelson. It continued on as a one-room school of four grades until 1952. As the school was seen by parents to be “greatly lacking” for students and teachers “in comfortable accommodations and vital equipment necessary for their extra curricular and recreational needs, such as were enjoyed by children in the larger schools” they formed a parent-teacher association in September 1951 to remedy the situation. From the beginning the PTA was very active in making its desires known to the School Board and “the school was very fortunate to have an organisation which put forth such a united effort on behalf of the children”. Their first bazaar fundraiser allowed the PTA to purchase a hot plate and the necessary utensils to provide the students with soup and cocoa during the cold weather. At their request, the School Board improved the electrical wiring in the school and built a roof over the stairs to the basement and provided more sports equipment for the children. Art classes and piano classes were started through the efforts of the members and in 1953 a cub pack and a brownie pack with PTA members as Cub Leaders and Brownie Leaders was created. A ditto machine and school library were the direct results of successful bazaars held by the PTA. The PTA also made a survey of the school district in 1951 to analyse the future school population and presented the results to the School Board. Following this, a portable unit was erected beside the existing school house for use the following September. It was in use until 1958. In the late 1950s, the PTA approached the School Board and the Burnaby Parks and Recreation Commission and proposed a park on the grounds adjacent to their school to relieve a playfield deficiency. The creation of Riverway West Park was the direct result of this proposal. As Parks Planner Paul Stocksted pointed out in 1961, “All of this would not have been possible had not the people associated with the PTA insisted on the solution to the problem of inadequate play areas.” In 1957 the first unit of the new Riverway West School underwent construction. Designed by Carlberg and Jackson with Remigio Maniaga as the contractor, it was completed in September of 1957 and consisted of four classrooms, an activity room and administration facilities. A two classroom addition, also designed by Carlberg and Jackson. was completed on the last day of 1959, three months after its construction began.

- The Clef Society of Burnaby was incorporated on February 8, 1949, with original subscribers Elizabeth Dawson, Lilian Haste, Mona Weeks, Emily Scott, and Eleanor Cailes. As a non-profit organization dedicated to fostering music appreciation and music advancement in Burnaby, and to promoting musical instruction and education and encouraging outstanding musical talent, the Society created musical evenings in homes, public recitals and concerts, children's plays, light operas, and scholarship competitions.

- The Burnaby Gem and Mineral Club was formed in Burnaby in 1963 and became a chartered member club of the Lapidary Rock and Mineral Society of British Columbia on June 15, 1965. Meetings were held at Bonsor Hall on the third Tuesday of every month. The club became a registered federation member of the Gem and Mineral Federation of Canada in 1978. From 1978 to 1985, Marguerite “Mary” Skinner was the recording secretary. Mary and her husband John Skinner were members for 21 years, and during that time, John organized all of the “big shows” with the help and support of fellow members. On December 15, 1985, the general membership of the Burnaby Gem and Mineral Club voted to close the club. They had a final dinner meeting on February 18, 1986, at the Copper Kettle on Kingsway.
