Scope and Content: File consists of a scrapbook with a handpainted wood cover titled "50th Anniversary / G.G.C". The scrapbook documents events and ceremonies of the 4th Guide Company with the first half of the scrapbook containing photographs and documents regarding the 50th Anniversary of Girl Guides which was celebrated at St. Nicholas Church in 1960 while the second half documents earlier events from 1926, as well as other events in the 1960s such as; "Year of the Golden Jubilee", a parade in North Burnaby as well as Thinking Day 1976-1978, banquets, a disco contest, camping on Hollyburn mountain and a visit to Victoria in 1979. On November 3rd, 1926 the company was registered as the 5th Burnaby Guide company, in 1951 the number was changed to the 4th Vancouver Guide Company and in 1956 the number was changed to the 4th Burnaby Company.

Scope and Content: Subseries consists of one photograph of Overlynn Mansion.

History: Overlynn Mansion was built by Charles J. Peter in 1909. Peter was the manager of G.F. & J. Galt Company and he pioneered the development of the Vancouver Heights area in North Burnaby, believing it was one of the most picturesque districts in Greater Vancouver. He developed his own estate with the hope that this would be an incentive to lure buyers to the subdivision. The house remained as the Peter home until 1936, when the estate was sold to the Sisters of Charity of Halifax, a Catholic order which had moved to Vancouver Heights in 1927 to operate a school. The mansion became their convent and new girls' school known as Seton Academy. The mansion's original conservatory was demolished and a two-storey addition was constructed. In 1970 when the school closed, Overlynn was purchased by Action Line Housing Society which developed the senior's development on the property. It was designated by Burnaby Council in 1995 and was the first heritage building in B.C. to have its interior features protected.

Scope and Content: Subseries consists of photographs, correspondence and literature pertaining to Alfred Bingham.

History: Alfred "Alf" Bingham was born in England in 1892 and moved to Canada in 1912. His first job in Canada was laying track for the Grand Trunk Pacific Railway (GTPR) from Edmonton to McBride in 1912. His second was in Vancouver at the Rat Portage Mill on False Creek, working on the Resaw machine. He quit after one week due to poor working conditions. After taking part in the 1919 Winnipeg General Strike as a delegate of the Retail and Mailorder Union (A.F.L.) on the Winnipeg Trades and Labour Council, Alfred moved to Burnaby where he and fellow Burnaby residents Angus McLean and Percy Little worked ten-hour days to build a shingle mill on the edge of Burnaby Lake for Simpson & Giberson. George Green, a carpenter and millwright (and author of “The History of Burnaby”), also helped in the construction of the mill. Alfred built his own home from lumber cut from the mill in the Lockdale area on Sherlock Street between Curtis Street and Kitchener Street. On April 10, 1920, Alfred married Mary Jane "Ada" Reynolds. Alfred and Mary Jane often took in foster children during their marriage. Due to her nursing experience, Ada was often called upon to deliver babies in the Burnaby area. The couple also had a dog named Bess. The Binghams were instrumental members of the Army of the Common Good, collecting vegetables and grains from growers in the area and even producing over 125 tons of vegetables from its own gardens to feed children and youth who were suffering from the lack of resources during the Depression. The Army was in operation for ten years and during that time, the members organised the credit union movement of British Columbia and drew up the Credit Union Act through the Vancouver Co-operative Council. They also started co-op stores and the Co-Op Wholesale Society. Alfred was also the Secretary of the Burnaby Housing Committee. In 1946, he became the Secretary of the North Burnaby Labour Progressive Party (LPP). Mary Jane died on August 9, 1969. Alfred died on April 29, 1979.

History: Alvin Burtch was a British Columbia Electric Railway conductor who drove for the BCER for 38 years, 30 of those years on the Burnaby Lake Line. He was the driver for the line's final run in 1953, his 37th year of service. Burtch had a daughter named Hazel Cunningham, who grew up in Burnaby and married Friends of the Carousel member Harry Sumner.

History: Anne Elizabeth Stokes was born in Misson, BC and raised in Surrey, BC. She married Vancouver Police Department Constable Charles Boyes in 1947, and Major Rolf F. Macey in 1965. Anne and Rolf had two children: son Lane Macey and daughter Naomi Macey. Anne worked as a psychiatric nurse at Essondale Hospital and Director of Volunteer Services at Burnaby General Hospital. She volunteered her time for various clubs, including Save the Children and Dixon House. Anne passed away at Eagle Ridge Manor in Port Moody, BC in 2007.

History: Rose Croucher was born to Ann Eliza "Annie" (b. August 1861, d. 1962) and R. Coucher in January 1895. In 1907, the Croucher family moved to British Columbia. As a student, Rose studied geometrical drawing using Blair’s Canadian Drawing Series workbooks. On on February 21, 1914, Rose married James Oakes Bancroft in Vancouver, BC. Together they had three children: James A. (b. 1916 or 1917), Rosie (date unknown), and George E. (b. August 1927). The Bancroft family were poultry farmers throughout the early 1900s, transporting their farmed eggs from Burnaby to the Hudson’s Bay Company Vancouver using the British Columbia Electric Railway system. Rose Bancroft also served as Secretary-Treasurer of the Central Park Poultry Co-op Association in the 1920s until her husband's death in 1930 at the age of 42. In the late thirties and early forties, while James A. Bancroft was stationed in Calgary with the Royal Canadian Air Force, his younger siblings lived together with their mother and grandmother at 1963 21st Avenue in Burnaby. Rosie Bancroft studied French and English history in Social Studies in 1937; her brother George studied the seasons in General Science II in 1942. Rose died in 1965 at the age of 76.

History: Bernard Bellinger arrived in Burnaby in 1927 with his parents, Jack and Elizabeth Ellen "Nell" Fraser Bellinger, and four younger siblings: Christine, David, Marion, and James. His youngest brother, Robert, was born in Burnaby. The Bellingers lived at the Old Orchard Auto Court on Kingsway and Willingdon in two small cabins. They later moved to a home on Pearl Avenue in the Royal Oak district. Bernard went to Kingsway West primary school and then Burnaby South high school. While studying to become a pharmacist, he apprenticed in Vancouver, but lived in Burnaby his entire life.

History: The Board of Works was established circa 1895 in order to provide infrastructure to the rapidly growing population of Burnaby. During 1926 and 1927, the committee was referred to as the Board of Works, Transportation and Industries. Prior to 1926, there was a separate committee called Transportation and Industries which was responsible for this portfolio. In 1928, new committees were formed and the duties associated with transportation and industry was given to the Transportation and Telephone Committee and a Health, Hall and Grounds, Fire and Industries Committee, respectively. From 1933 to 1942, no Board of Works was appointed as the Provincial Commissioner governed Burnaby. When the Board was re-appointed in 1943, it became known as the Board of Works and Waterworks. In 1945, waterworks became a separate committee known as Waterworks, Health and Sanitation. In 1954, the Board of Works reverted to its 1943 name Board of Works and Waterworks for one year. By 1955, Waterworks became a separate committee. The Board of Works disbanded circa 1959.

Scope and Content: Subseries consists of photographs of and publications related to the Burnaby Art Gallery and Fairacres property.

History: The Burnaby Art Gallery association was founded in 1967. The purpose of the association was to present a historical and contemporary art program by local, regional, national, and international artists; facilitate the development of emerging artists; provide diverse art educational programming; acquire culturally significant works on paper. The City of Burnaby assumed management of the gallery, its collection, staff and governance in 1998, with the art gallery then taking on the added responsibility of caring for and managing the City of Burnaby’s permanent art collection. The Gallery, along with the Shadbolt Centre for the Arts and the Burnaby Village Museum in Deer Lake Park, are part of the Parks, Recreation and Cultural Services Department of the City of Burnaby. The Burnaby Art Gallery is located inside the historic Ceperley House, built by Henry and Grace Ceperley. The couple purchased a strawbery farm on the north shore of Deer Lake from George Clayton in 1909 and built their home, also known as "Fairacres", on the property in 1911. The house was designed by the English architect, R.P.S. Twizell and with its river rock veranda, beautiful hand-crafted woodwork, stained-glass and tile, remains one of the finest examples of Edwardian architecture in the Lower Mainland. Grace and Hentry Ceperley had one daughter named Ethelwyn who married James Edward Hall. Ethelwyn and James Edward Hall had three children: Edith Ceperley, James Edward "Junior," and Florence Renn. In 1917, Grace Ceperley died and left Fairacres to her husband with the stipulation that when the home was sold the proceeds would be used to build a playground for the children of Vancouver in Stanley Park. In 1939, the local Catholic Diocese funded a group of five Benedictine monks from Mount Angel, Oregon to establish a priory in the province. The monks purchased the Ceperley House for their monastery. They also built a large gymnasium on the property. After serving as a monastery, the house was used as a fraternity for some of the first students attending Simon Fraser University, and then became home to the art gallery in the 1960s. The City of Burnaby acquired the property in 1966 and the house was designated a heritage building in 1992. In 1998 the City began restoring exterior of the house and upgraded the building for improved public use. The renovations were completed in 2000, and transformed the house back to its appearance of 1911. The gymnasium built by the Benedictine monks was converted into into the James Cowan Theatre. There are two main galleries, a lounge gallery with a fireplace and easy chairs and The Shopping Bag, a gallery shop run by volunteers. The goals of the gallery are to: provide access to contemporary Canadian art, present works from the permanent collection; collect contemporary works on paper; and offer challenging and educational exhibition related programming.

History: In 1992, the City of Burnaby celebrated its 100th birthday. To mark the anniversary, a Centennial Committee was struck by the Mayor and Council to coordinate activities and oversee the year-long celebrations. The History and Heritage sub-committee was formed with the goal of collecting and preserving historic materials detailing the development of Burnaby. In November of 1992, the committee advertised for the submission of personal stories, photos and other memorabilia and received material from over 150 early Burnaby residents in response. Although the Centennial Committee disbanded at the end of 1992, the work that had been begun by the History and Heritage Sub-Committee continued under the direction of the Burnaby Heritage Advisory Committee (later named the Community Heritage Commission) and proceeded under its authority until the project was completed. The stories that were captured to accompany this material and the memories of some of Burnaby’s earliest residents were brought together in the form of book, published in 1994: "Burnaby Centennial Anthology: Stories of Early Burnaby".

Scope and Content: File consists of images and selected contents from a scrapbook with 38 double sided pages containing mostly photographs with some newspaper clippings, written material and emphemera including a page of badges and ribbons which reads "Enrolment & Membership Card of / Joan Bailey 1926 / 1st Burnaby" and an embroidered alphabet of the Morse Code. The third page of the scrapbook includes a four page chronology titled "History of Guiding - Burnaby / 1913 - 1960" compiled by Mrs. Dolly Weber, Mrs. J. Heaps, Miss Eileen Periton, Mrs. J. Albertson and D. Fowler. The scrapbook also includes an original letter and post-script from Lady Olave Baden-Powell to Mrs. Fowler dated November 5, 1961; a typewritten copy of: "TSOONA" / PROVINCIAL GUIDE CAMPSITE - ROSEDALE B.C." and a three page typewritten copy of "THE CAMPFIRE / Volume 1, No. 4 _ November 1935 _ Vancouver, B.C.". Scope and Content: Subseries consists of the SFU/Burnaby Centennial Committee's Image Bank project records. Records include: Image Bank database and backups in a variety of formats; 813 photographs collected by Simon Fraser University Archives staff; eleven screened negatives from the Burnaby Image Bank that were used for the publication "Burnaby: A Cultural Inventory and Resource Guide"; and one VHS tape and DVD access copy of "Burnaby's Photographic Family Album / Burnaby Image Bank Collection / Volume 1 / 1992" which was created by the Committee for public viewing and purchase. The collection of photographs for the Image Bank project were gathered from various donors to commemorate the Centennial of the City of Burnaby. All photographs were collected from Burnaby families' personal albums by Simon Fraser University Archives staff during 1991 with a focus on the history of the people and the landscape of Burnaby. Photographs were collected from every decade for every neighbourhood in effort to describe the City's evolving ethnic, cultural and physical landscape. In March 1992, 20 of these images were selected by a jury for their aesthetic quality and displayed at the Bennett Library Gallery at Simon Fraser University for the "Images of Burnaby" exhibition. This exhibit travelled to various locations between 1992-1993 within Burnaby and Douglas College in New Westminster. The entire 800+ collection was made available for public purchase and viewing on video cassette. As well, each Burnaby school and each branch of the Burnaby Public Library received their own VHS copy for information and research purposes. The "Image Bank" video collection was buried alongside the video "Images and Voices of Burnaby" in the City of Burnaby's time capsule, mounted at City Hall in 1992.

History: The Burnaby Lake Men’s Community Service Club was incorporated on March 26, 1946. The aims of the club were to: cultivate a desire in our members to be of the greatest service to their community; elevate and reinforce the standards of good citizenship; foster friendship and broaden human sympathy and express them in terms of social helpfulness; and provide for wholesome recreation, education, civic and other leisure-time activities of the community. ccording to a membership drive handout produced in 1951, yearly membership was $1 and in order to be a member you had to: have been a former member; be present active member; be of the male species; or be t least mildly interested in the betterment of the social activities of your community and the promotion of good fellowship. Director of the Department of Education, Henry Hill, was the first president of the Club. Hill was also instrumental in the creation of the Valley View Community Council, which was originally made up of two appointed delegates from the Central Burnaby Ratepayers & Citizen’s Association, the Burnaby Lake Men’s Community Service Club and the Women’s Community Club. The Valley View Community Council became a Society on February 10, 1948. In 1943 Burnaby City Council pledged to help fund at least one Community Centre in each Ward of the Municipality by 50% (up to $2,500 per building). The Club had a plan to provide a Community Centre for the Central Burnaby area as early as 1945 when they visited the site allotted to the cause by the Council of Burnaby on Douglas Road at Ledger Street (later renamed and numbered 4050 Grandview Highway and later called Canada Way). They organized Annual Country Fairs, with the first held in 1944, to raise funds from community members and by November 30, 1946, they had $3,750 “held for the purpose of building a Community Centre.” The building was erected and by December of 1949 it was used for the purpose of holding a Municipal Election.

Scope and Content: Subseries consists of papers collected by the Burnaby Public Library.

History: Burnaby's first library was founded in 1927 as the North Burnaby Library Association. Its first library building was established in 1935 on Hastings Street. In 1954, Burnaby enacted Bylaw No. 3522 to establish the Burnaby Public Library (BPL) and in 1957 BPL merged with the North Burnaby Library Association. BPL's first permanent library was the McGill branch, built in North Burnaby in 1961 and named after North Burnaby Library Association volunteer Grace McGill. Following McGill, BPL then established the Kingsway branch, Central Park branch, and Cameron branch. Central Park was replaced by the Bob Prittie Metrotown branch in 1991 and Kingsway with the Tommy Douglas branch in 2009.
