- History
- John Burton was born in 1912 in New Westminster. He went to Second Street School, Edmonds, Saint Anne's Convent, and St. Louis College and Connaught before graduating from Burnaby South School in 1930. While at high school, John worked at Cowan's Music Store at 716 Columbia Street in New Westminster on Saturdays and after school. John Burton's grandfather, John Foley, was the founder of the Orangeville Sun newspaper in Orangeville, Ontario, established in 1861. He ran the paper until his death in 1882, when his son, John Foley Jr. took over as editor and publisher at the age of sixteen. Two of his daughters were involved in the newspaper: Margaret Foley was a regular contributor to the paper, and John Burton's mother was a typesetter. When John Burton was a teenager, he went to Orangeville to learn the trade from his uncle. He was only there eighteen months when his uncle died December 21, 1932. The family was unable to hold on to the business and the paper amalgamated with the Orangeville Banner newspaper in 1933.

- History
- James P. Dickson was born in Peeblesshire, Scotland. He came to Manitoba first in 1905 when he was 21 years old, but didn’t move to British Columbia until 1909 when he started the Dickson Brothers Flower Shop and Nursery at 3271 Kingsway. He was a landscape gardener, designing the garden for the Model Burnaby Home at the Royal City Fair in 1920 and designing Burnaby exhibits at the provincial fairs at New Westminster in 1922 and 1923. In 1922 he spoke at a South Vancouver Horticultural Association event; the subject of his talk was “Natural Gardens.” J.P. Dickson was a Burnaby School Board Trustee from 1921 to 1924 (chairman in 1924), 1927 to 1932 (chairman from 1929 to 1932) and 1943 to 1944. In 1925 he was the Labour Party Candidate for Reeve of Burnaby. In 1930 he was president of the May Day committee and officiated at the crowning. J.P. Dickson attended the British Columbia School Trustees Association 26th Annual Convention in Vernon with his family and served as the association’s president from 1932 to 1933. The Dickson family lived at 1519 (later 7770) Nelson Avenue, Burnaby. J.P. had at least one child born about 1913, who attended South Burnaby High School in his teen years. According to “Burnaby: A Proud Century” by Pixie McGeachie James Dickson is also known for his part in creating an unofficial presentation to the King George and Queen Elizabeth during their royal visit in 1939. There was no official stop scheduled for Burnaby, but he persuaded the parade marshal beforehand to slow the procession as it approached Royal Oak (and the Chamber of Commerce built a viewing platform there to attract a large crowd). Dickson encouraged everyone to move in to narrow the width of passage on Kingsway. As the royal car appeared on Royal Oak, the crowd surged forward and blocked its path. A Burnaby girl rushed towards the car waving a bouquet from the Dickson Brothers Flower Shop and an aide-du-camp passed it directly to the Queen “who acknowledged the gift with approval just as the car began to move again.”

- History
- Jubilee Labor Hall was built with the original purpose of furthering the cause of socialism. The original shareholders, at a share of $5.00 each, built the first hall in 1927. When it burnt down in 1935, the shareholders set out to rebuild. In 1936, the shareholders began renting the hall out to CCF-NDP for a nominal amount, continuing this practice for 35 years. They rented to various other groups in Burnaby and in 1970, when the shareholders decided that it was time to sell the hall, it was purchased by one of these groups: the South Burnaby Elks. After the hall was sold, the remaining balance was used to establish lasting tributes to the original stakeholders and assure the continuous assistance to the cause of socialism for all time.

- History
- Emily Brew married William James Phillips in Douglas on the Isle of Man in 1884. Their first child, James William Phillips “Jim” was born in Douglas on the Isle of Man, on November 18, 1886. His brother, John George "George" was born July 27, 1890 and their sister Emily Brew "Amy" was born ca. 1892. The family of five arrived in the Capitol Hill area of North Burnaby in 1910, and built their first home on Ellesmere Avenue. They were the second family to move to the area. Jim Phillips was a carpenter by trade, but was better known as an avid amateur photographer and painter, his photographs serving as an important record of early Burnaby. He and his brother both served in World War I, but only George returned. Their sister married John William "Jack" Holmes on November 25, 1914 and had two sons, Douglas and Fred in 1926. George also married and had a son, James Brew Phillips. Emily (Brew) Phillips died January 20, 1915 at the age of 53. Her husband William James Phillips died December 2 of that same year at the age of 55. James William "Jim" Phillips served as a Private in the Canadian Infantry (British Columbia Regiment), and died overseas on August 15, 1917 at the age of 30. His sister, Emily Brew "Amy" Phillips Holmes died July 22, 1976 at the age of 84.
