- History
- William Holmes was the first non-Indigenous resident of Burnaby and was born in Kilkenny Ireland January 4, 1812. In 1833, at the age of 20 yrs, William Holmes immigrated to Canada from Ireland in with his parents, Joseph and Jane (McCullough) Holmes and ten other family members including two of his married brothers and their wives, two sisters with their husbands and two unmarried brothers. This was the first group of thirteen to leave Ireland and set up homesteads in Canada near the shores of Lake Huron. The family settled on land concessions in Huron County, Ontario about 14 km southeast of Goderich. The area in Huron County was first founded in 1832 by John and Samuel Holmes and the community was known as Holmes Hill before becoming Holmesville [ca. 1850]. In 1837, William Holmes is noted as owning Lot 23, Concession IX, Goderich Twp. Much of the village of Holmesville grew up around the five road concession near the border of his brother’s farm so William decided to open a store. The Holmesville post office opened on March 1, 1855 and William was appointed the first post master which he operated until May 1857. William met and married Mary Richardson in 1841 and the couple had three daughters: Jane (1844-1926) (married Charles Studdert Finlaison in New Westminster in 1863); Anne Maria (Annie) (1846-192?) (married John Gunther Jennings in New Westminster in 1865 and married Robert Johnson in New Westminster in 1877) and Elizabeth (1848-1934) (married Thomas Carrington of Lakes District in 1867). William’s wife, Mary (Richardson) Holmes died in Holmesville sometime between 1848 and 1853. Following the death of his first wife, Mary, William married Charlotte McCullough (McCulloch). The couple had four daughters; Arabella Charlotte Amelia (1854-1943) (married Arthur Robert Green in 1887); Laura (1855-1867); Arabella Henrietta (1857-1929) (married Clark Wesley Gillanders in 1880) and Mary (1863-1864). During the late 1850s, William became aware of the gold rush and opportunities opening up in British Columbia so left for the west coast in 1858 at the age of 46 yrs. In preparation for his move to the west coast of Canada, William obtained a letter of introduction from top government officials of Canada. William Holmes arrived in British Columbia in 1859. Upon arriving, he first worked running pack trains from Harrison Mills to Lillooet. After earning some money, he decided to re-invest it in land. His first pre-emption of land occurred on January 21, 1860 for 160 acres situated on North Road from the Military Camp to Burrard Inlet and distancing 25 chains south of the Brunette River and 20 chains south of the river with the land extending in a westerly direction. On March 17, 1860, Holmes received a Crown Grant for this and other land in the immediate area totalling 415 acres of which was known as Lot No. 1, Group 1, Rural Land, New Westminster District. The balance of land was situated on the east side of the Brunette River – Lot 13, with 344 2/3 acres of which he made an application to purchase on June 26, 1860, and a Crown Grant dated March 16, 1861 covering 86 acres. Holmes also pre-empted land in Port Moody and Pitt Meadows in 1860 and 1861. The name of “Brunette River” is officially attributed to William Holmes who referred to the river as “Brunette” due to it’s dark colour originating from the peat lands above the lake. Following his purchase of property, he sent for his wife Charlotte, their three daughters and her three step daughters (from William’s first marriage). Charlotte and the six children made the long trip to B.C. by ship and rail, crossing the Isthmus of Darien at Panama. They arrived in B.C. in October 1861 and moved into a one room log cabin built by William. The cabin stood on the North Road at the foot of Sapperton, on a bluff overlooking the Brunette River. Eventually the family moved to a larger dwelling but the original cabin remained on the site until the 1890s when it was burned after being used as a sick house. Mr. Holmes was instrumental in organizing the first Orange Lodge in British Columbia. He was a prominent Orangeman who joined the order in 1840 and was the first master in the order of the City of New Westminster when the Lodge No. 1150 was established there. Charlotte Holmes died in New Westminster in 1893 at the age of 70 years and William Holmes died in New Westminster September 11, 1907 at the age of 95 years.

- History
- Florence Elizabeth Hart Godwin was born in New Westminster in 1898 to parents, Frederick John Hart (1884- 1945) and Alice Hart (nee Chapman) (1885-1935). Alice and Frederick Hart were married in Yale in 1895 and had five children, Kingsley (1897-1916), Florence (1898-1999), Alice Fredricka “Freda” (1903-1905), Edwyna Jane (1907-1997) and Frederick John “Jack” (1908-2001). Alice Hart (nee Chapman) was the daughter of Edward Chapman and Jane Chapman (nee Isbell) born in Birmingham England and Frederick John Hart was born in Trinity, Newfoundland. Florence’s father Frederick J. Hart owned a successful real estate business in New Westminster from 1891. His real estate company managed many of the property sales in the lower mainland including Burnaby and he was involved with a number of economic development companies in the area. Frederick also served as alderman with the City of New Westminster. In June 1905, the family was heartbroken by the sudden death of Florence's younger sister Freda who died at age two of meningitis. In that same year, Frederick purchased 13 acres of land abutting the north east end of Deer Lake and built a small summer house "Avalon". Florence, her siblings and mother spent the summer months on the lake. Her father, Frederick worked in New Westminster during the week and joined them on the weekends. In 1910, Florence’s father built a larger permanent family residence at this location also named "Avalon". Mr. Frank W. Macey designed the house which is now the home of “Hart House” restaurant. While living in Burnaby, the family attended St. Alban’s Church and Florence was taught by Miss Harriet Woodward who had a small private school inside her home. Florence later attended Douglas Road school before being placed in Crofton House School in Vancouver. The Hart children found many playmates on the lake, including members of the Hill and Peers families. During World War One, in December of 1916, Florence's brother, Kingsley Hart was killed while serving overseas. This tragedy devastated Florence's parents and prompted them to sell "Avalon" in 1917 and move to Kerrisdale in Vancouver. In August 1922, Florence married Harold Ward Godwin at St. Mary's Church in Kerrisdale and they moved into their own home in Burnaby. That same year, Florence joined the auxiliary to the Victorian Order of Nurses. Florence made rounds as a nurse travelling from home to home on a bicycle. Florence and Harold had one child, Elizabeth Joy Hart (1929-1978) who later married Robert Carl Freyman (1925-2011) and worked as a nurse. In 1950, Florence was awarded a life membership to the V.O.N. along with her husband, making them the only husband and wife in Canada to be accorded this honour. By 1973, Florence had served more than 50 years as a member of the Board of the V.O.N. in Burnaby. In that same year, Florence was presented a life membership by the I.O.D.E. for her many contributions to the work of the organization.

- History
- Frances Mabel "May" Webb was born in Cradley, England on December 5, 1872. She sailed from England to Victoria, BC with her parents, Joseph William Webb and Frances Jane Webb (nee Yapp) on the SS Lake Winnipeg in 1889. One of the few possessions that she brought with her was an old wood-rimmed bicycle which she found quite useful after her move to Burnaby. She would ride it all the way from Patterson’s Trail and Westminster Road (today’s Patterson Avenue and Kingsway) to the Woodward’s store in Vancouver where she would place her grocery order. She packed a pearl handled revolver with her in order to scare any bears she might see along her ride. In 1890, Frances married Dugald Campbell Patterson (b. 1860, d. 1931) in Victoria, BC. In 1894, the couple built a pioneer homestead and farm on five acres at what would become the north east section of Central Park. Dugald founded Vulcan Iron Works (later Dominion Bridge Company) in New Westminister in 1903, and the couple settled in the Central Park district. By 1904, the family moved to the Edmonds district where in 1909 she operated the post office that her husband founded. In 1910, they began construction of a new house, complete with tennis courts and a gazebo, on 14 acres purchased for $720. The house is now located at 7106 18th Avenue and is a dedicated heritage building. The couple had seven children: William H. "Bill", Jean, Frances Mabel Lili., Dugald C. Jr, Mary, Charles Bruce, and Alice. The Pattersons were community-minded citizens that served Burnaby through their involvement with local municipal affairs and politics. In 1909, Dugald became the first postmaster of Edmonds. He also served as a School Trustee from 1912-13 and was one of the first residents to lobby Burnaby City Council to preserve the local ravines as parks. They also helped build the Central Park Presbyterian Church, along with other pioneer families. The family name is remembered and honoured by the naming of Patterson Avenue and the Patterson SkyTrain Station located in the Metrotown area. Frances Mabel assisted her husband with an insurance and real estate company that he founded in Burnaby and New Westminster. This experience would prove invaluable, as she would later become an insurance agent for the Wawanesa Insurance Company (founded in 1896). Frances never owned an automobile, so she met her insurance clients all over Burnaby, New Westminster and Vancouver by using the Lower Mainland’s street car system. The insurance profession continued to provide her with a steady income long after her husband’s death. Frances Mabel died in New Westminster, BC on August 30, 1960. Frances Mabel Lili Patterson was born on June 9, 1905 and was the fifth child born to Dugald Campbell and Frances Mabel Patterson. She became the first PBX switchboard operator for the Municipality of Burnaby in the early 1920’s. PBX, or Private Branch Exchange, was the term used for an internal telephone system. Frances later became president of the Professional Women’s Association of New Westminster, and volunteered her time with the May Day celebrations in New Westminster. She was also a dedicated member of the Rebekah Lodge (the women’s division of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows). - History
- Mabel Edith Honor McClean Hawkshaw (1886-1946) was born in Wexford, Ireland to parents, Washington Gilliland McClean and Honor Delamore McClean (nee Thomas). Mabel's parents had four children; Charles Gilliland McClean; Elsie (Rae); Evangeline Mai (Goff) and Mabel Honor (Hawkshaw). Mabel emigrated from Ireland to Canada with her family in 1903 and the family moved to Vancouver in 1905. In 1909, Mabel married John Edward “Jack” Hawkshaw. Mabel and Jack Hawkshaw had three children; Richard “Crichton” Gilliand Hawkshaw (1912-1972); Edward Delamere “Dal” Burrington Hawkshaw (1914-1988) and Merton Cedric “Cedric” Perry Hawkshaw (1924-2008). Prior to her marriage in 1909, Mabel Hawkshaw worked for the Canadian Pacific Railway in Revelstoke. Mabel was founder and publisher of the “Burnaby Post” newspaper (1922-1937) and wrote articles for city dailies and magazines under the pen name “Percy Egerton Sterling”. Mabel also worked as the first female bank teller in Canada and was the first female censor of motion pictures in British Columbia (1928-1946) and also worked as an assistant advertising manager of the Hudson’s Bay Company. Among other accomplishments, Mabel was the chairperson of the committee for Burnaby's first May Day event in 1925, was active as a leader in the Girl Guides, a member of several women's clubs, a speaker on matters of education and film production in Vancouver and Victoria and was also a member of the Juvenile Court in Burnaby and the I.O.D.E. At time of her death in 1946, Mabel was living on West 57th Street, Vancouver. John Edward “Jack” Hawkshaw (1881-1934) who was born in Glanworth Ontario to Captain William Stearne Hawkshaw and Elizabeth Merton Hawkshaw (nee Shore). Jack came to Vancouver in 1900 and soon after arriving, Jack moved to the Yukon where he worked for the Canadian Bank of Commerce serving in Dawson and White Horse. He returned to Vancouver in 1904 and joined the newly-organized Northern Bank. In 1906, Jack became a bank manager in New Westminster and later was manager in New Westminster for the Northern Crown Bank. Jack resigned from the bank in 1914 to fight in World War I and moved his family to Calgary where he began his military training. In 1915, Jack was stricken with polio which left him crippled in one leg barring him from active service. In the 1920’s, he worked as a treasurer for the Royal City Canning Co. and Cunningham Trapp Hardware Company. In 1933, Jack worked as an accountant treasurer for the Crane Shipyards. Jack Hawkshaw was a member of the Canadian Credit Men’s Association of Burnaby and the Kiwanis Club of New Westminster. In May 1934, Mabel and Jack purchased property on Lasqueti Island with a sheep ranch. One month after purchasing the property Jack Hawkshaw died tragically in an accident on the island when he was thrown from a horse drawn carriage with his ten year old son Cedric. Cedric survived the accident but his father died on the dock on Lasqueti Island. The family dog, Dixie also died after she swam after the fishing boat carrying Jack Hawkshaw’s body and Cedric to the mainland for medical attention. John and Mabel’s first home was located at 309 Pine Street in New Westminster. In 1920, the family relocated to 763 Wedgewood, Burnaby (later renumbered 7743 Wedgewood Street) where they lived until 1931. In 1932, the Hawkshaw family moved to Vancouver where they resided in different locations until after the death of Jack Hawkshaw. Mabel continued to operate the sheep ranch on Lasquesti after Jack died in 1934, with a succession of tenants until Mabel’s death in 1946. In 1936, Mabel moved back to Burnaby for a few years, residing at 5590 Douglas Road in 1936 and 3908 Deer Lake Avenue in 1937 (Heritage home known as the R.F. Anderson House). - History
- Eber Stride was born in Somerset England, one of three brothers, along with Albert and Sydney. Older brother Sydney came to Canada with Eber and Eber’s wife Mary in 1888 and settled in New Westminster. Both bricklayers by trade, Sydney soon began operating the brickyard at Queen’s Park. Mary McKinnon was born in Dorset, England on October 1, 1857. Her father, Hugh McKinnon worked as a coast guard. Mary worked as a school teacher in Somerset for nine years before marrying Eber Stride on April 28, 1888 and relocating to Canada. Eber and Mary were living at Royal Avenue in New Westminster when their first child Charles Edgar was born on February 24, 1890. Their second child, Edwin Hubert was born November 26, 1892. In May of 1893 the family of four moved to Burnaby. Their third child, Marguerite "Margaret" Ella, was born in Burnaby on April 2, 1895. The Stride family owned and operated Stride and Son Florist Green houses located at their residence at 1749 Kingsway (later renumbered 7434 Kingsway). Eber joined the municipal council a year after its incorporation and served for nineteen consecutive years; from 1894-1911 and again in 1913. Eber and Mary were life-long members of the St. Alban’s Anglican Church in Burnaby, dating back to the Churchs’ beginings. The Strides are considered Edmonds district pioneers. The Stride children attended Westside School and later Royal City High School. Both sons worked for the family florist business after they left school. Edwin continued working there, applying for a chauffeur licence renewal in September of 1916 at the age of twenty-three. Edwin and Eber operated the business together for over 40 years. Charles Edgar didn’t stay a florist long. Instead, he had a brief career building houses before travelling to San Francisco by bicycle with a friend to attend the World’s Fair. He continued on to Tijuana, Mexico before heading home to join the Reserves and head overseas. Once back in New Westminster, Charles Edgar opened a series of photographic studios along Columbia Street. His first studio was Universal Photographers, operating from 1918 to 1925. He opened Brighton Studios at 657 Columbia Street as well from 1924 to 1925. In 1926 he opened Stride Studios at 657 Columbia Street, which thrived until 1968 when an unfortunate fire in a neighbouring business destroyed most of his prints and negatives. In 1928 he bought Columbia Studio across the street at 624 Columbia Street and owned it anonymously until 1960. For thirty years, no one knew that he owned both businesses and was able to send disgruntled customers “across the street to the competition.” Margaret Stride married and became Margaret Hokanson. Mary Stride died September 24, 1933 at the age of 75. Eber died November 8, 1942 at the age of 84. Edwin died April 16, 1970 at the age of 77. Charles Edgar died February 29, 1972 at the age of 82. Stride Avenue in Burnaby was named after Eber Stride.

- James Gilmore Ettinger was born in Noel Road, Nova Scotia in 1863. He worked his way across Canada with the Canadian Pacific Railway (CPR) and landed in New Westminster in 1888. He was one of the first men who helped log the area for the settlement that is now Burnaby. With two other men, James started a brick manufacturing plant in the area of Deer Lake. In 1889, a second brick plant was started on Brickyard Road in Surrey on the bank of the Fraser River. Martha Harriet Hembrough was born in Leeds, England in 1874 and later moved to Haney. James Gilmore and Martha married in 1890 and had seven children: Evelina "Eve" (b. August 8, 1891, d. January 1, 1976); Ella May (b. ca. 1894, d. February 1983); Leonard; George William "Bill" (b. February 18, 1899, d. November 26, 1970); Stanley (b. December 27, 1901, d. March 10, 1966); Ethel (b. ca. 1904, d. December 22, 1982); and James. On May 19, 1911, the Ettingers bought parcel Lot 8, Block C sub-division 19 and 20 of DL 95 no. 556 for $350.00. Their eldest daughter, Evelina was signed over the Deed of Land for this property on April 21, 1914. In 1919, the Ettinger family was living at 1177 19th Avenue, Edmonds, Burnaby. James worked as a Road Foreman in Edmonds, and later as ward foreman for the Municipality. Ella May married Charles Morton Marshall on July 7, 1926. Evelina married Don Digby (d. October 21, 1965) on April 30, 1930. Ethel married George H. McKennell (d. June 18, 1985) on March 16, 1931. Bill worked as a Pacific Stage Lines (PSL) bus operator who “pulled” the first bus service between Vancouver and New Westminster and between Vancouver and Chilliwack in 1924. He received a number of National Safety Council non-accident awards during his career. He married Jane Wilson on July 11, 1931. James Gilmore died on June 9, 1948 at the age of 85.
