This home was built as a retirement home for Baptist
Missionary Reverend James Black and his family in 1925; the
Black family resided in the home until the early 1970s. The
Black Residence is a good example of the Period Revival
movement that occurred between the two World Wars. At

Bruce recalls that he didn’t attend Gilmore Avenue School, but his mother, Sheila McRae, worked there as an assistant. He describes her work and her enjoyment of it. Bruce also notes that the school had an air raid siren mounted on its roof which sounded terrifying to him when it was tested periodically during the 1950s Cold War era.
