She served as a Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) in the British Columbia legislature from 1972 to 1986, (her seat was the Vancouver-Burrard riding and later the Burnaby-Edmonds riding) making her the first Black Canadian woman to be elected to a Canadian provincial legislature. She was a leadership candidate for the New Democratic Party in 1975 and came in second with 41% of the vote.
